Mill Brook Railroad
США
Добавлен 23 мар 2007
The Mill Brook Railroad is a 7-1/4" gauge freight hauler in Vermont. Follow along with the ups and downs of this cold climate minimal gauge railroad. Along the way, we'll visit other miniature railroads and do a lot of track maintenance.
Incoming Shop Work
Today, we have a caboose coming into the shop. It is painted for Rutland Railway and I've been asked to do a list of repairs.

There's a lot more going on here than you might think. I've given you as many camera angles as I could while boring out 8 wheels so I could make the video as interesting as possible. neat caboose very close colors to the 70. what is it in for? good luck fixing it up Aaron.
It's in for fresh paint, repair to the steps and ladders, wiring and lettering.

Your MOW crew need to get that ROW mowed before a bad wreck happens so you can avoid a bad derailment and get sued for causing property damage
The worst thing that can happen with weeds on the ROW is loss of traction. It's not going to cause a wreck. Especially at the speeds we're going. Also, nobody can sue you for property damage if you wreck your own train on your own property. Who would sue? I'm not going to sue myself to force myself to fix what I broke when I derailed my own train. Instead, I'll just fix it.
You are kidding, the man owns the property and engine
Do you have track going all the way to the garage( shop) yet? To work on things and not have to lift and move them ....
Love the shot at 1:42, those weeds look so cool with the train like that.
I like the van in toe looks good same paint scheme ( van is canadian for caboose)
We had vans here, too. It depends on the railroad. The van does look good in that paint scheme. It's going to be freshened up and finished with Rutland Railroad lettering.

Very cool caboose! Looks like Spring has taken over the Mill Brook.
@@rogerhuber3133 Summer is here.
Even hens chase it....
So cool to see Ossipee caboose...euh.. i mean MILB RR caboose back in service after years of idleness. Like that grassy branchline look. It doesn´t seem to interfere with trains. In fact it will cushion when something fed up of running decide to kiss ballast and ties... as long as it stays grass and not "bush" type of vegetation. Since you probably hadn´t time to play grass killing, you save time & money. I don´t think they´re will be a huge impact on ties life. Just be sure there´s NO poison ivy ! Every year i hunt them to see they´re back in 30 feet range next year. Only seedings of the year get killed. People will complaint about Round Up, well i found a stronger commercial grade. At 240 $ a jar, i´ll see results next year. In the meantime they get dark brown/black in less than 12 hours. For those than don´t know those beasts, they´re queen of embush and camouflage. The ramping type among stawberries, bush, i don´t have, and vines that climb on poles, trees among virginia creepers. Even if they play in light or dark green, dull or shiny, they roughly look like strawsberries and more like rasperries. Sometimes really hard to see who is who. Rasperries have spiked all along their stem, even tiny ones. Poison ivy have none. Last year i couldn´t search everywhere, too many grown trees fell on the ground. Without that yearly chase, some spot have car size this year ! It´s the ONLY vegetation i try to get rid off. Like too much nature but when they grown even against the house, thanks to birds poop, and having cats that go everywhere, i´m fed up like you have no idea. Last year i got it on ankles and lower legs and still have skin scars ! And i´m sure i wasn´t in contact with it. I never goes in tall grass without long scrutining while walking. Sorry for that long bla bla. They also like the forest frontier with grassy bushy field. Hope it will be useful. Thanks Aaron for that old time train when caboose marked the end.
@@danielfantino1714 This isn't the Ossipee Caboose. It's a customer's caboose. The weeds do cause a lot of issues with tie condition and traction.
Nice addition nonetheless 😊
You can transform the tank car into a weed sprayer and spray the weeds on the tracks
@@JonathanColemanMoreTrains That's exactly the purpose of the tank car. To become a weed sprayer.
this is so cool!!! Been watching for quite some time and never get tired of it. What an accomplishment!!! Also, thanks for sharing this with us, appreciate it very much!!!
Lovely video work, made better with just the train and no people. The railway looks great with all the vegetation, although I'm guessing you might want to get rid of the stuff in the middle of the track. Keep up the good work. 😎
The vegetation does cause traction issues.
I agree, the weeds give the line such a cool run down look and lend it a lot of character. Too bad they cause traction issues.
Cool! What are you having to repair on it? I'm thinking you need to make one of those for yourself! Looks really good behind the 70.
@@BriggsCanyon The caboose needs a bunch of cosmetic work. New roofwalks, reapirs to the marker lights, paint, decals, etc...
@MillBrookRailroad Very cool, will there be "in process" videos? (Like I don't know the answer to that already)

Legend says Aaron still boring it.... No i´m teasing you and joking. On my riding car, wheels are perfect in one direction. In the opposite there is a clic clic sound. There is a defect that i can´t see. Not prone to derailment, just annoying. Since we run 95 % of the time forward, i put the trucks in "good position" , then i´m fine. I still wonder what´s the imperfection. So much work explain the difference of price betwen finished and unfinished wheels. "Just drill a hole in the center for the axle" is as we can see not so easy. Thanks Aaron for your patience and happy 4th of july celebration. Any train run with champagne (or whatever) to cheers it ?
why not just test it with a axle been placed in the bore
The axle is most likely a press fit.
@malcolmone1 I need to know how close I am to the final dimension on each pass. I know it won't fit for most passes, and I don't want to remove too much material. Remove too much material, and you've scrapped a wheel. Even wheel blanks aren't cheap enough to take those kinds of chances.
I just read something about using rock salt to kill weeds. Vinegar kills the top but not the roots. I realized rock salt would not be great for the ties. Maybe a test along the sides? It said to just sprinkle it around. Not table salt.
@@petercruikshank2618 Rock salt is way cheaper. That's why not table salt.
Why not through the branches over the embankment? Would help with dirt erosion.
@@michaelconnolly4109 my branch piles along the bank are already full.
Working hard there. Nice fire wood for the 4th of July. Tree service my cousins son works for had been very busy around Pittsburgh PA with bad storms and torandos. Have a great holiday!
I saw a news story about a guy in the Pittsburgh area whose truck was crushed by a tree, so, as a joke, he put a for sale sign on it that said ran when parked.
@@MillBrookRailroad didn’t see that. Thanks!
Someone who works on thw 12" scale playing with trains for a hobby is like a CAD designer 3D proinging for a hobby.
@erniepike3902 it sounds like it ought to be rare, but it's really not that uncommon in this hobby. I've met more people in the railroad industry in this hobby (from train men to CEO's) than any other place outside the railroad. The difference is that here they've usually got smiles on their faces.
@@MillBrookRailroad, I get that, the I'm a CAD designer who spents a lot of hobby time designing things to print, often train related.
with all the potential logging work to be had, might the Millbrook RR look into acquiring <building> a set of logging Buggies <Skeleton Cars> to move logs from where they lay to a prep area.
@lordsherifftakari4127 I've thought about that, but flat cars are much more versatile, and any car I add to the fleet will need to be stored somewhere.
If you do a chain between the cars (or a bar) you could make them short for storage
All they need is a Barnhart Loader and a Class A climax or shay, and the log loading could be ANYWHERE in the eastern US from roughly 1880 to 1900
Looks like some weed wacking and weed spraying needs to be done 😂

Not only that, but he is not looking at his phone - he has the controller in his hand, not his phone.
After watching a few videos of trains doing "fun-time" (CP 2816, Reading & Northern 2102), earlier this morning, its nice to see one actually doing some real work, even in inclement weather!
What’s your source for those couplers?
Tombeeonline.com
I like the looks with the steps and hand rail
I am certainly no expert. I once built some airplane parts for my expiermental airplane (that I no longer have). I drilled to an undersize below 3/4 inch and then used a reamer to take the hole to size. Would that method work here?
It would work here.
great move of the debris, wet rails stink without sanders! feathering the throttle to keep it rolling! I like your camo technique “out of site, out of mind! “ unload it when the rain stops.
I think I would have indicated z just to check before boring since you were right there.
thats what you call a boring good time
Either that, or it's a good time boring.
Next up, how i flush my toilet.
Let me know when you post that.
Another useless video. Go get a life.
The footplates of the blue one look quite dangerous...
Just noticed the tread of that wheel seems rather narrow. This brings up the thought of seeing some of your wheels appearing to drop into some frog gaps, causing me to question if your wheel profiles are on spec.
The wheels dropping into the frog gaps on my home railroad has more to do with my homemade frogs being beaten to death and poorly made to begin with than it does the wheel profile. The wheels are IBLS compliant. The track is not quite, but mostly close enough.
I must say a very well rounded video!
Why, thank you! Stick a-round and see what turns up.
